Equipment

  • Cake pans (8 or 9-inch round recommended)
  • Stand mixer or hand mixer
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Offset spatula
  • Cooling rack
  • Mixing bowls
  • Parchment paper

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • cups all-purpose flour
  • teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter room temperature
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Instructions

Prep the Oven and Pans:

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 8-inch round cake pans or line them with parchment paper.

Mix Dry Ingredients:

  • Sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.

Cream Butter and Sugar:

  • In a mixing bowl, cream the butter and sugar using a hand mixer or stand mixer until light and fluffy (about 3-4 minutes).

Add Eggs:

  • Beat in the eggs one at a time, ensuring each is fully incorporated.

Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients:

  • Alternate adding the dry ingredients and milk to the butter mixture, starting and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix gently and avoid overmixing.

Add Vanilla Extract:

  • Stir in the vanilla extract until just combined.

Bake the Cake:

  • Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Cool and Decorate:

  • Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before frosting and decorating.
